Heads-aluminum or cast iron?
08/16/06 at 22:04:03

Hey you guys Tell me which are better in certain applications. I know that the aluminum heads dissipate heat better but are they as durable as cast iron? Are they easier to port? From looking thru Jegs and other catalogs the good cast heads are almost as high as some of the alloy ones.  Monte

As cheap as aluminum heads are now days I wouldn't build another Small Block without them. They are easy to repair and are very durable.and the weight difference is huge. Also easier to port. Even if you had a cast set of heads you could repair, your better off going with aluminum. Better bang per buck.

In my opinion.

That's one upgrade I would like to make as soon as I paint the Nova.
Aluminum heads w/ roller rockers.
What cc would you recommend, Chris?

I don't understand why anyone wouldn't spend the extra three or four hundred bucks for the alloy ones. How can the manufacturers expect anybody to pay so much for the cast heads.  Are the alloys as strong at the rocker arm studs?

I AGREE TOTALLY W/CHRIS ALSO YOU CAN RUN HIGHER COMPRESSION WITH ALUM WITH LESS CHANCE OF DETONATION

A few issues back Car Craft tackled this subject....they ran the exact same pair of heads except for one being cast iron and the others being aluminum.....d@mn near no difference on the dyno between them but the aluminum are lighter.....I don't think they ran much over 10.5 to 1 compression in that motor....
