Having swam with Southern Stingrays several times on a couple trips to Grand Cayman, they are very calm and not aggressive at all - unless they feel threatened.
Beth and I have pics of us holding them; of course, the ones on the sand bar in Grand Cayman are basically as domesticated as you could get.
They get fed several times a day-every day from people.
It's a blast, you just hold a piece of squid in your hand, and they'll swim up to you and suck it up into their mouth. The barb is about the size of a pencil and located at the base of the tail on the top side, under the skin. Actually it just looks like a small bump.
Definitely a 'freak' accident- to miss all his ribs and puncture his heart-
Anyway- that's my 2 cents.
