I'll stir the pot, since it is too quite around here. Robzridez, you made a comment about it doesn't matter who has the fastest car in town anymore. Apparrently you have  a car that can't compete with the big boys or you don't run your car on a Saturday night. I don't think the big dogs put 40 - 50 thousand in their cars to sit on the side lines and b.s. about how fast their cars should be. Now, I'm not picking you out to harrass you personally, I'm just commenting on a comment you made.

Title: Re: Quiet

Way to stir the pot on your second post to the forum.

Now I remember why I retired from racing 8 or 9 years ago.   ;D

I will be back next year though. Although I will still be retired from street racing. Cars just got way too fast lately to race on the street. (But would love to match race at the track.)

If we were all still running 7.50's or slower I would still be on the street.

Chris

Well, you said it was too quiet. lol. I figured that would get a response.  I agree that cars today are too fast for full nos passes in the country. I know a guy in Lawton that drives his car 30 miles to town and can lay down a 5.70 pass. pretty neat. One thing to ponder thou, a 7.0 ride at the track is more like a 7.50 - 7.60 in the country. specially if you have one of those big cubic inch BBC.

Title: Re: Quiet
Post by Chris Smith on 04/23/06 at 16:56:39
Very true!
I think my last pass at cowlot my car was running 7.20's or so. It was fun as hell but side by side could get crazy. (I do miss those days, racing at lunch and after school. Hundreds of passes and many 400's tore up.) Sorry I created the shortage of 400's guys! But for some reason I never lost one at the track or in an actual race. (I lost two in the High School parking lot!)

I took it out for a single pass about 9 years ago when the car was running 6.60's at the track and you are right. Hard to hook a ten inch slick at cowlot with a big block's torque curve.

Can't wait to get my chassis dialed in next year and then have a little fun! I sure miss this stuff. Who knows maybe after I get my chassis dialed in I might build a newer engine to drop in it. Although I did strengthen the bottom end this year. No extra HP but when I built it the first time I only wanted to make a single pass under 6.99 I don't care much for bracket racing. Just like to go fast and be able to take it to sonic for a coke. So when I ran my 6.67 (At only 67 MPH since I snapped my driveshaft when I pulled high gear) I put it on the trailer and moved on to the next phase of my life. Now that I have that taken care of I just want to get back in and see if I can jump back in where I left off. If I can run 6.66 or faster I will call it a success!  ;)

Hey n2o glad to see your back I kinda figured you weren't on here anymore. ;D

Title: Re: Quiet
Post by robzridez on 04/23/06 at 22:52:59
by the way who are you?and what do you have? If I could afford to spend 40 or 50 g on my car the I could have went to loves put 10 dollars of super and raced And then next day I could have pulled(wait payed someone to pull it) tear it down and see what I tore up from running pump gas through a motor with that much compression. The only reason I had it out that night was because we had a kind of a "meet the members of chevy speed". and I dont have anything against the guys that can afford to by a ready to run 20 thousand dollar car but I think the guy that had to biuld it himself and save to get there gets the extra cudos for him and his ride. So once again "the airport is closed I dont have the gas to run" I would have enjoyed a race I dont really know what the car will do since I got all the bugs out of it and I really dont care if I lose a race because I DON'T have the fastest car in Altus nor will I ever have the fastest car in Altus but i have a fairly hot car and I'm out there having fun with it . It's sad that "street racing" people have to talk so much s h i t  but when you go to the drag strip everybody super helpful and all agree its about having fun. Think Floyd might be on to something by not wanting to be able to drive his to sonic and get a coke he wouldnt have to listen to you would he....

well this is getting interesting, just thought i would post up and let yall know the progress i got the heads saturday threw them on sunday, went to adjust the guideplates and one of the studs decided to bring the threads on out with it so ill be looking for a heli-coil kit that nobody decided to stock today lol and hopefully throw the motor in tonite (monday), the bed, hood, rollpan, and that stuff will be primered and ready for paint tonite (monday) so all i got left as far as body work is the cab ill try to get some pics posted up later to show yall the custom work lol

Title: Re: Quiet

see now Robz, you took it personally and you weren't suppossed to. If I meant to ramrod you, I would have said"If it takes av gas-does that really make it a street car or just a slow race car with lights". The fastest street car that came out of Altus has been a garage built SBC and not a $40k car. Now I think the fastest car is an orange nova running 6.14s. Ahh, it's good not having a fast car anymore and being retired out of the street scene.  At least I livened the forum up for awhile. now back to my rose pruning.

i build my blazer and i had to save...oh damn nevermind im still building it, oh well i just thought i would say something about that cuz i mean if you dont build it with your own two hands then its not really yours.

Title: Re: Quiet
Post by Chris Smith on 04/25/06 at 22:46:59
I used to do everything on my car myself. Even my cage. As fast as I want to try to run my car it's just not safe to do it myself. My chassis guy can build a much safer cage than I can. Also, I am still learning transmissions. I do build all my motors and everythign else though.   ;D

There are just some things that other people can do better and safer. I don't think you should have to build everything but the more the better.

Chris

Title: Re: Quiet
Post by n2o_user on 04/26/06 at 06:42:36
John owns the nova not me. What is the thin line of doing the car "yourself"? If a person labors out the majority of the work -  such as the body work, paint, chassis, and buys his motor or has someone else build the motor,  tranny or rearend.  Where do you you draw the line?  ::)  Do you still need someone to build that carb, set the valves or the timing and the rearend gear lash? At one point in history, it used to be cheaper to do all the work yourself and not farm it out. Kudos to the person that can still can do all the work himself. If everyone's wallet was fat, would they just buy a car how they want it??

Title: Re: Quiet
Post by Chris Smith on 04/26/06 at 14:47:31
I think I feel somewhat in the middle on that range. Like you said, so many things can be done cheaper or better by someone else.

When I used to race all the time I couldn't afford to pay anyone to help so it was learn it yourself or don't do it. Those times have so changed. I think the more you do yourself, the more kudos you should get. But if you design and have the car built with help from other people that are experts that is great also. I think the same way in terms of speed. Me ten years ago would go nuts if someone built there car and never raced it. I couldn't understand it.  ;D Now I see some people just want to own a cool car. In my opinion that still puts them ahead of the guys that don't even care about cars.

To each his own. That being said, I can't wait to get my car going again. Now it seams as if it is going to be forever. I don't care to try to be the fastest guy in town but would like to run pretty quick. We could spend our whole lifes trying to one up someone and it just turns out to be a pain in the butt. I just miss the company of other genuine car people. Hanging out on a saturday night or just bs'ing about hot rods all day. I am just glad to see others feel the same way I do. I thought there were just one or two people left messing with this stuff. Sure seems it's pretty active again.

I will always miss the days of 6-10 passes a day out at cowlot getting beaten by Jimmy or Jerry and then waiting for the other guys to get off work so I could go back out and get my confidence back. The days of NEVER turning down a race day or night. All nighters getting ready for a grudge race and then winning. (By only two car lengths, so everyone would race each other since I only put two on them.  ;) ) And them trying to figure out how one could beat the other one by 6 after I only beat them both by 2.

To the people that still street race... My hats off to you, I miss that sooooo much.  (Can you tell I took Monty's car out to the country last night and layed down a few passes?)

Thank you guys for staying so active, let me know anything I can change on the site that might bring others on board.

Chris

The S#!t talked around here is so mild compared to what I like to talk, street racing here is too much of a gentleman sport around here. You have to have thick skin if you want to street race, most people cant handle it. The BS is what street racing is all about to me. If you have a car out, you better be ready for the chit to start, no excuses, no whinning, there is a fine for whinning.  Talk all you want, dont make me go get grandmas station wagon,,,

True, crap talking is a big part of street racing these days. I better just keep my mouth shut since it will still be a while till mine is ready to run again.   ;D

Maybe I should build a second car to run on the street. (This one will be street driven every once in a while, but not raced on the street)

I know what you mean about not saying anything Chris. All I can talk about is braket racing for now. I would love to have a street car again. I havnt raced anything serious on the street since my first sreet shootout at Noble about 1o years ago. I had my white Malibu back then, stock suspension, mufflers, etc. I drove it on a regular basis on the street and decided to got to Noble and run a shootout and to see how fast it really was. I had never had it to the track at that time, and was suprised when I ran 9:90's that first race and won the event. I was the first 10.5 tired car to run in the nines at Noble for one of their shoot outs. I eventully got it to 9:47 @ 146 before back halfing it. The whole car was bult by me except for the trans. in my garage including back halfing job on it. I am planning on getting another car going one of these days, and I wont mind the BS,,,,

Great picture BTW.

I remember your old car, it was a fast ride for sure!

Welcome to the forum, we are glad to have you.

Thanks Chris, I enjoy running the pu. Picture was from the new track at Lawton a few weeks back. It is running the engine I had in the white Malibu back in the day. Runs 6:40's in the pu. Engine has sure seen alot of passes over the years. What are you doing to your car?

Title: Re: Quiet
Post by Chris Smith on 05/03/06 at 11:08:13
I decided to get back into turning wrenches last year and I was going to buy a third project car to mess with. I then decided to go ahead and redo my car again. It just wasn't built to handle back to back passes. Since I was going to replace the rearend and stiffen up the bottom end of the motor I decided to go ahead and put 33 x 16 rubber under the backend. So at this point I am also going to redo the inside and repaint everything. I should have it back in my hands in altus in a couple months. It is not going to make any more power than it did 8 years ago, but it should at least not spit out any parts every pass.

We have the wheelwells cut now and already put back together. Should have the tires fitted this week so I can order my axles.

Take a look under the "drag racing pictures" section under "Nova at Bill Moodys."

That always was a very strong motor in your car and your truck flies!

Chris

Bill is a good guy, very good work. I do most of that work myself on my cars and have helped others on theirs. I dont have time to do it now days, If I do another car, Bill would be my choice. Will check out the pictures.

I had asked a few people and they all said you were gone so much lately you wouldn't be able to do it. Would have been nice to keep it in altus. =)

I think I have figured out who is going to paint it, but am still open for suggestions.  ;D
